Abstract

Purpose : This research focused on examining Korean privates¡¯ usage level of medical facilities and their contributions to the proper use of medical facilities by analyzing factors affecting the levels of medical facility usage.

Methods : For this purpose, a questionnaire survey on one division stationed at the forefront was conducted and data was collected on May 1, 2007. As for the surveyed participants¡¯ characteristics and medical facility usage levels, a single variant amount analysis was applied. In order to ascertain factors related to the levels of medical facilities¡¯ usage, dual variant amount analysis and regression analysis were adopted.

Results : First, as for the educational levels in the individual attribution factor, about 80.2% of the surveyed were above junior college graduate level ; as for the rank in the army, the number of the corporals noticeably exceeded other ranks, and the number of the lance corporals was smallest. Second, as for adequate amounts of sleep and rest among healthy behaviors, cases of inadequacy exceeded those of adequacy; those who felt stressed out accounted for 77.6%, which was more than three times the number of those who didn¡¯t feel stressed. At present, the smoking population accounts for 65.9%, As for usual reported health levels, the legions who reported ordinary levels accounted for 45% ; as for the amount of experience lying in bed for the past four weeks and limited experience in current activity, 84.6% and 82.4% of the survey respondents said ¡°none¡± respectively to the two question items. Third, the major medical facilities participants used included : a medical corps to a battalion? ; the major means of transportation to a facility was on foot or by ambulance; the major leader was a senior private at the time of an outpatient visit and a military surgeon in the case of inpatient usage of the facility. Fourth, as a result of regression analysis, a meaningful variable-the location of a medical facility-affected the level of outpatient medical facility usage, Among the militaryrelated factors, results showed that the farther the medical corps¡¯ location from the facility, the lower the level of usage for that facility as compared to the medical corps¡¯ usage when it was located within a short distance. The variables significantly affecting the medical corps¡¯ in-patient usage levels included the rank and location of the medical corps. Additionally, the survey results showed that the lower the rank of the facility and the father the medical corps¡¯ location from it,, the lower the medical corps¡¯ level of usage of that facility was. In addition, the lower the rank, the higher the tendency to skip medical treatment in the past was.
